Learn about Ibero - American Women Perspectives through the movies


To celebrate International Women´s Day on March 8th, the Ibero American Association of Cultural Attaches will open a Film Cycle with movies from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, Uruguay, Peru and Portugal featuring female directors, roles and topics related to women in the movie industry of Latin America, Spain and Portugal.


The cycle that will be available for free, from March 8th until March 19th will opened with a conversation between the Chilean director Maitee Alberdi and Colombian Filmmaker Famor Botero.


Alberdi and Botero will discuss women´s role in the industry and their challenges in Colombia and Chile using examples of their most recent films. Paola Rey, a Colombian actress who stars in Boteros’ picture Sofia, will be part of the conversation to talk about how her main role in the movie, representing a Colombian entrepreneur, finds her true self through a series of thought-provoking circumstances in a small town in Santander, Colombia.


Alberdi will be talking about her documentary film, The Mole Agent, that has been screened at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition and that was selected as the Chilean entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. The Mole Agent a tender story of an 83-year-old man hired by a family to investigate the conditions of a retirement home where their grandmother has been recently put in. In the process, he becomes involved with the lives of some residents.

The Film Cycle is one of the most important events for the Ibero-American Cultural Attache Association that promotes culture from 12 countries in the western hemisphere, Spain and Portugal to the United States.


The event is done in collaboration with the Washington Diplomat and promoted by all the member countries.

since she was born, wants to claim her. Amid the reproaches of her brothers who blame

Sofía for the mistakes of her nephews, Sofía tries to make her life with a love of many years.


Chile: The Mole Agent

When a family becomes concerned about their mother’s well-being in a retirement home,

private investigator Romulo hires Sergio, an 83 year-old man who becomes a new

resident–and a mole inside the home, who struggles to balance his assignment with

becoming increasingly involved in the lives of several residents.


Guatemala: Capsules

Mexico: Retreat

Retreat explores the bond between three generations of women as they struggle to assert

their independence in a paternalistic society. A story of familial love and courage that

celebrates female strength by quietly delving into its unexpected sites of concentration.


Peru: Daughters of Nantu

Directed by Willy Guevara

Daughters of Nantu has been filmed entirely in Awajun, a native language from the depths ofthe Peruvian Amazon. The film shows the history and mythology of the Awajun tribe which,according to legend, were given the gift of agriculture by Nantu, the Goddess Moon, throughthe women of the community, whom established a matriarchal society.


Portugal: Snu

Directed by Patrícia Sequeira

The film revolves around the elegant, fearless Danish publisher Ebba Merete Seidenfaden,

who became known as Snu Abecassis, a woman who would challenge and confront

Salazar's dictatorship. After moving to Lisbon with her husband Vasco Abecassis in the

1960s, Snu devotes herself to building her new publishing house.


Spain: Maria (and Everybody Else)

A struggling writer afraid to let anyone read her first novel, María is at a crossroads. Her

father, with whom she still lives, is engaged to his nurse after a recent stint in the hospital.

Her brothers have successful careers and are in long-term relationships. After 20 years of

caring for her father and siblings following the death of her mother when she was 15, María

must look inward and re-evaluate her own life.


Uruguay: Las Toninas van al Este

Directed by Gonzalo Delgado & Verónica Parrota

Miguel Angel Garcia Mazziotti, a Rio de la Plata's decadent showbiz gay figure, rejects a

visit from his estranged daughter, until he learns that she is pregnant.
